It is very much an academic necessity to publish the translations of the plays of Raju Das in order to take them to a wider readership, both in Bengal and outside Bengal, and thereby make the readers aware of the Dalit drama tradition of Bengal.

আসলে কালের নিয়মেই সময় ও সমাজ ক্রমশ বদলাচ্ছিল। পুঁজির অনিবার্য আগ্রাসনে বদলাচ্ছিল মানুষের মূল্যবোধ। কায়েমি স্বার্থ, ভোগবাদের হাহানি, উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা, ক্ষমতার লোেভ মানুষের সৎ বিবেককে ক্রমশ উপড়ে নিচ্ছিল। বিশ্বাস আর নৈতিকতার শিকড়েও পড়েছিল অদ্ভুত টান। এসবেরই প্রতিফলন দেখা যাচ্ছিল জীবনে, ক্রিয়াকর্মে, সাহিত্য শিল্প-সংস্কৃতির ধর্মেও। সুভাষ কিন্তু সভ্যতার এই নীতিনৈতিকতাহীন অধোগামী স্রোতধারার সঙ্গে নিজেকে মেলাতে পারছিলেন না। আর সেখানেই সংঘাত। সংঘাত ব্যক্তির সঙ্গে সংঘাত প্রতিষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে। সুভাষ কিন্তু উপর্যুপরি সংঘাত-আঘাতে ক্ষত-বিক্ষত হয়েও নিজের বোধ ও বিশ্বাসের জায়গা থেকে একবিন্দুও টলেননি।

প্রকৃতি ও ইতিহাসের তেমন গভীর কোনাে খোঁজখবর না নিয়েই হেমন্তের এক সকালে, আজ থেকে পাঁচ বছর আগে রওনা দিয়েছিলাম আন্দামান দ্বীপপুঞ্জের দিকে। আমার পায়ের তলার ত্বক, হয়তাে বা পাথর ছড়ানাে পথে পথে মাইল মাইল হাঁটার ক্ষতচিহ্নময়, তবে গড়পড়তা শহরে বাঙালির মতাে সরষে সেখানে নেই। তবু যা দেখেছি এ দেশের নানা প্রান্তে, সবকিছুকে কোথায় যেন অপ্রাসঙ্গিক করে দিয়েছিল আন্দামান, তার প্রকৃতি, মানুষ ও ইতিহাসের নিরিখে। ইতালির রাজনৈতিক দার্শনিক আন্তোনিও গ্রামসি লিখেছিলেন, 'মানুষ আসলে ইতিহাসের পরিণাম, কোনােভাবেই প্রকৃতির নয়। তাঁর সেই লিখনের মানে বােঝার মতাে বাস্তব, আমার মতাে তুচ্ছ মানুষের জীবন চার দশক পেরনাের পর আন্দামানের মাটিতে পা দিতেই আমাকে ধাক্কা দেবে সারাক্ষণ, একথা কল্পনাও করতে পারি নি কখনাে। না, ঐতিহাসিক বস্তুবাদের নির্বোধ ছাত্র হয়েও নয়, কমিউনিস্ট পরিবারে জন্মে অ-কমিউনিস্ট হয়েও নয়। তবু, ধাক্কা যখন দিল, তখন, যতটা যাওয়া যায়, দ্বীপপুঞ্জের জলে, স্থলে, অভ্যন্তরে, মানবমনের গহনে, যেতে যেন আমাকে হবেই। সেই যাত্রাই বুঝি আমার মতাে মানুষের নিয়তি। পাঁচ বছর আগের আন্দামান সফর তাই, আজও আমাকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়ায়, তথ্য আর বিশ্লেষণ আর দ্বীপপুঞ্জের বাসিন্দাদের মনের খোঁজ পেতে। সংগ্রহ করি বই, সাময়িক ও দৈনিকপত্রে প্রকাশিত সমস্ত খবর। যদি, সে সবের মাধ্যমে ছুঁয়ে থাকতে পারি ওই ইতিহাসের লােকজনদের। ' অতিদূর সমুদ্রের পর ' গ্রন্থটিতে সেই সব তথ্য উঠে এসেছে।

প্রকৃতি ও ইতিহাসের তেমন গভীর কোনাে খোঁজখবর না নিয়েই হেমন্তের এক সকালে, আজ থেকে পাঁচ বছর আগে রওনা দিয়েছিলাম আন্দামান দ্বীপপুঞ্জের দিকে। আমার পায়ের তলার ত্বক, হয়তাে বা পাথর ছড়ানাে পথে পথে মাইল মাইল হাঁটার ক্ষতচিহ্নময়, তবে গড়পড়তা শহরে বাঙালির মতাে সরষে সেখানে নেই। তবু যা দেখেছি এ দেশের নানা প্রান্তে, সবকিছুকে কোথায় যেন অপ্রাসঙ্গিক করে দিয়েছিল আন্দামান, তার প্রকৃতি, মানুষ ও ইতিহাসের নিরিখে। ইতালির রাজনৈতিক দার্শনিক আন্তোনিও গ্রামসি লিখেছিলেন, 'মানুষ আসলে ইতিহাসের পরিণাম, কোনােভাবেই প্রকৃতির নয়। তাঁর সেই লিখনের মানে বােঝার মতাে বাস্তব, আমার মতাে তুচ্ছ মানুষের জীবন চার দশক পেরনাের পর আন্দামানের মাটিতে পা দিতেই আমাকে ধাক্কা দেবে সারাক্ষণ, একথা কল্পনাও করতে পারি নি কখনাে। না, ঐতিহাসিক বস্তুবাদের নির্বোধ ছাত্র হয়েও নয়, কমিউনিস্ট পরিবারে জন্মে অ-কমিউনিস্ট হয়েও নয়। তবু, ধাক্কা যখন দিল, তখন, যতটা যাওয়া যায়, দ্বীপপুঞ্জের জলে, স্থলে, অভ্যন্তরে, মানবমনের গহনে, যেতে যেন আমাকে হবেই। সেই যাত্রাই বুঝি আমার মতাে মানুষের নিয়তি। পাঁচ বছর আগের আন্দামান সফর তাই, আজও আমাকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়ায়, তথ্য আর বিশ্লেষণ আর দ্বীপপুঞ্জের বাসিন্দাদের মনের খোঁজ পেতে। সংগ্রহ করি বই, সাময়িক ও দৈনিকপত্রে প্রকাশিত সমস্ত খবর। যদি, সে সবের মাধ্যমে ছুঁয়ে থাকতে পারি ওই ইতিহাসের লােকজনদের। ' অতিদূর সমুদ্রের পর ' গ্রন্থটিতে সেই সব তথ্য উঠে এসেছে।

রবীন্দ্র-পরবর্তী বাংলা কাব্যসাহিত্যে অনেক মহারথীর আবির্ভাব ঘটেছিল, যার অন্যতম ছিলেন কবি জীবনানন্দ দাশ। কবির জীবিতকালেই তার কাবাদীপ্তি অনেককে চমকিত, কাউকে কাউকে বিরক্তও করেছিল, যদিও সেই দীপ্তির প্রসারণ বা অন্তর্ভেদিতা সম্পর্কে যথার্থ ধারণা তাদের অনেকেরই ছিল না, সন্তবত কবির নিজেরও ছিল না। ফলে সমস্ত জীবন ধরে তাকে সংশয়ে থাকতে হয়েছে। জীবিতকালে তাে বটেই, তার মৃত্যুর পরেও কয়েক দশক সেই সংশয় আচ্ছন্ন করে রেখেছিল পাঠক-গবেষক-সমালােচকদেরও। বস্তুত, সময়েরই আছে সেই ক্ষমতা, যে তার নির্মোহ গতির সাহায্যে, প্রকৃত দীপ্তির ওপর লৌকিক যে মলিনতা জমা করে, তা অপবৃত করে সেই দীপ্তি পৌছে দেয় পাঠকের হৃদয়ে। পাঠকের মন তখন উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়ে নতুনভাবে তা আবিষ্কার করে। সেই অলাকিক সময়ের হাত ধরেই জীবনানন্দের যাবতীয় সাহিত্যকৃতি, সমস্ত সমালােচকদের ভুল প্রমাণ করে, পাঠকের সবরকম সংশয় দূর করে, তার জন্মশতবর্ষের আগেই পাঠক-হাদয়ে মহার্ঘ্য স্থানটি দখল করে নিয়েছে।

প্রয়াত বিষ্ণু বেরার প্রকাশিত, অপ্রকাশিত এবং অগ্রস্থিত নানা ধরনের লেখা দু মলাটের মধ্যে ধরা পড়ল এই বইয়ের সুত্রে। দু'একটি বাদ দিলে আগের বইগুলিতে সংকলিত কোনো লেখা এই বইয়ে স্থান পায়নি। এই বইটি লেখকের মূলত অগ্রন্থিত লেখার সংকলন। তিনটি লেখা আগে কোথাও ছাপা হয়নি। একটি লেখা লেখকের মৃত্যুর পরে ছাপা হয়। সংকলনে ১৯৬৭ সালে প্রথম মুদ্রিত এমন লেখাও রয়েছে। সর্বশেষ মুদ্রিত লেখাটি ২০১৬ সালের।
'গণশক্তি’, ‘নন্দন’, ‘গণনাট্য’-র মতো পত্রপত্রিকা ছাড়াও লিখেছেন একাধিক লিটল ম্যাগাজিনে। গণনাট্য সংঘের জন্য গান, গীতি আলেখ্য, নাটক লেখা ছাড়াও ১৯৯০-র মাঝামাঝি থেকে বেশ কিছু প্রবন্ধ-নিবন্ধ লিখেছেন। নিয়মিত লেখক ছিলেন 'গণশক্তি'র বাংলা নববর্ষ এবং ২৫শে বৈশাখ ক্রোড়পত্রের। এই বইয়ে 'কবিতা-গান গীতি আলেখ্য’, ‘পুস্তক সমালোচনা' বাদ দিলে ৬৭টি লেখা সংকলিত হয়েছে। এই ৬৭টি লেখার মধ্যে সাহিত্য সংস্কৃতি, পঁচিশে বৈশাখ, বৈশাখ বরণ, রাজ্য রাজনীতি ইত্যাদি বিষয়ের উপর লেখা প্রবন্ধগুলি স্থান পেয়েছে।

এ-বইতে রয়েছে অবনীন্দ্রনাথের ছোটোদের সাহিত্য নিয়ে সাতটি প্রবন্ধ। কম আলোচিত-অনালোচিত তাঁর যাত্রাপালা ও ছড়াচর্চা নিয়েও রয়েছে পৃথক প্রবন্ধ। গ্রন্থিত সাতটি প্রবন্ধে আলোচনার আলোয় অবনীন্দ্রনাথ আলোকিত হয়েছেন। সাহিত্যকর্ম তো বটেই, আলোকিত হয়েছেন মানুষ অবনীন্দ্রনাথ। এ-বই শুধুই অবনীন্দ্রনাথ-কেন্দ্রিক নয়,আমাদের ছোটোদের সাহিত্যের আদিপুরুষ বিদ্যাসাগর থেকে রবীন্দ্রনাথ-দক্ষিণারঞ্জন, ছোটোদের সাহিত্য যাঁদের হাতে সমৃদ্ধ হয়েছে, এসেছে তাঁদের অনেকের কথা। বিভূতিভূষণের ছোটোদের সাহিত্য নিয়ে যেমন আলোচনা রয়েছে, তেমনই রয়েছে কামাক্ষীপ্রসাদ চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের ছোটোদের সাহিত্য প্রসঙ্গে। সেকালের প্রমদাচরণ সেন বা একালের কামাক্ষীপ্রসাদ কেউ-ই ভুলে যাওয়ার মতো লেখক নন। দুর্ভাগ্যজনক হলেও সত্য, অধুনা তাঁরা বিস্মৃত। এ-বইতে রয়েছে তাঁদের সৃষ্টিসম্ভার ও কর্মকাণ্ড নিয়ে আলোচনা। অবনীন্দ্রনাথ শিশুসাহিত্যের মুকুটহীন সম্রাট। তিনি চিরদিনের, চিরকালের। তাঁর সমকালের, আগে-পরের অনেকের কথাই এ-বইতে মূর্ত হয়ে উঠেছে। চেনা ছাঁচে, বাঁধা ছকের কেতাবি-বিশ্লেষণ নয়, আলোচনার পরতে পরতে মৌলিকতার আলো। সেই আলোয় আমাদের শৈশব-বাল্যের সঙ্গী, একদা আনন্দের সঙ্গে পঠিত বইগুলি আবার নতুন করে আবিষ্কৃত হবে। ফিরে পেতে, ফিরে যেতে ইচ্ছে করবে সেই রংচঙে ছেলেবেলায়।
