প্রকৃতি ও ইতিহাসের তেমন গভীর কোনাে খোঁজখবর না নিয়েই হেমন্তের এক সকালে, আজ থেকে পাঁচ বছর আগে রওনা দিয়েছিলাম আন্দামান দ্বীপপুঞ্জের দিকে। আমার পায়ের তলার ত্বক, হয়তাে বা পাথর ছড়ানাে পথে পথে মাইল মাইল হাঁটার ক্ষতচিহ্নময়, তবে গড়পড়তা শহরে বাঙালির মতাে সরষে সেখানে নেই। তবু যা দেখেছি এ দেশের নানা প্রান্তে, সবকিছুকে কোথায় যেন অপ্রাসঙ্গিক করে দিয়েছিল আন্দামান, তার প্রকৃতি, মানুষ ও ইতিহাসের নিরিখে। ইতালির রাজনৈতিক দার্শনিক আন্তোনিও গ্রামসি লিখেছিলেন, 'মানুষ আসলে ইতিহাসের পরিণাম, কোনােভাবেই প্রকৃতির নয়। তাঁর সেই লিখনের মানে বােঝার মতাে বাস্তব, আমার মতাে তুচ্ছ মানুষের জীবন চার দশক পেরনাের পর আন্দামানের মাটিতে পা দিতেই আমাকে ধাক্কা দেবে সারাক্ষণ, একথা কল্পনাও করতে পারি নি কখনাে। না, ঐতিহাসিক বস্তুবাদের নির্বোধ ছাত্র হয়েও নয়, কমিউনিস্ট পরিবারে জন্মে অ-কমিউনিস্ট হয়েও নয়। তবু, ধাক্কা যখন দিল, তখন, যতটা যাওয়া যায়, দ্বীপপুঞ্জের জলে, স্থলে, অভ্যন্তরে, মানবমনের গহনে, যেতে যেন আমাকে হবেই। সেই যাত্রাই বুঝি আমার মতাে মানুষের নিয়তি। পাঁচ বছর আগের আন্দামান সফর তাই, আজও আমাকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়ায়, তথ্য আর বিশ্লেষণ আর দ্বীপপুঞ্জের বাসিন্দাদের মনের খোঁজ পেতে। সংগ্রহ করি বই, সাময়িক ও দৈনিকপত্রে প্রকাশিত সমস্ত খবর। যদি, সে সবের মাধ্যমে ছুঁয়ে থাকতে পারি ওই ইতিহাসের লােকজনদের। ' অতিদূর সমুদ্রের পর ' গ্রন্থটিতে সেই সব তথ্য উঠে এসেছে।

The socio-political views of Harichand and Guruchand Thakur are presented in the plays like "Partition of Bengal" and "Domiciliary Custom of Harichand". Contemporary issues of social problems find expression in the plays like "12th June". "Ragging", "Black Law-2003", "Corona Virus", "Fight for Land" etc. A major portion of Dalit literature in Bengal deal with the diasporas issues. It is well addressed in the plays like "In Search of the Roots" and "A Conversation between Fatima and Rama". It is noteworthy that Raju Das who is the Director of Shantikunja Blind Natya Academy has written plays with disabled characters. The names of "Light in Darkness" and "The Sky" deserve mention. The issue of Dalit feminism is well-addressed in the plays like "Firebrand Females of the Badaban" and "Tears in Women's Eyes".
It is very much an academic necessity to publish the translations of the plays of Raju Das in order to take them to a wider readership, both in Bengal and outside Bengal, and thereby make the readers aware of the Dalit drama tradition of Bengal.
